Music in the Classroom

From 2014 - 2016 all 17   K-5 Oxnard School District students received a minimum of 7 music classes--thanks to the generous support of Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Foundation and matching funds from the Oxnard School District.  OMAG interviewed several candidates and chose  experienced charismatic music teachers to send to the schools resulting in more than 17,000 students receiving a minimum of seven classroom music lessons.

This pilot was named  the Oxnard Music & Arts Project or  "OMAP".

After all schools had received their free music classes, some principals saw the value of music. So they used funds to hire the OMAG music teacher at their schools for the 2016-17 school year.

For the 2017-18 school year, two schools, Harrington and Chavez, hired full time music teachers. An additional five schools invited OMAG teachers back to their schools.

In 2018-19 OMAG teachers were hired to teach music classes at Elm, McKinna, Rose, and Soria.

In 2019-2020 school year Elm and Marshall added full time music teachers-- where music piano labs were also built. More schools subsequently added music teachers and piano labs. OMAG's presence may have helped this gradual appearance of more music education being offered.

Concurrently OMAG offered after school classes at two sites: Squires and Multi Service Center Housing Center. During COVID in 2020-2021, music instruction was then provided online.

Since March 2022, OMAG has managed the Oxnard Arts Academy family instrumental music classes at 197 N. Marquita Street in the Colonia sponsored by the City of Oxnard.
